Olive and I have enjoyed Keswick meetings here this month, we have visited St. Vincent for a few days, and would ask your prayers for the christian school ...Emaluel High School...with 540 pupils. located in the Mesipotania Valley in St. Vincent. The RASTAS have set up a shop opposite the school and openly sell and smoke dope. The police station, yards away, do nothing to stop this. The children of the school need to be hedged about with prayer. Pray for the Principal, Grace Eustice who labours with these young people. They hear the gospel at school prayers every morning before school starts.

My parents are John & Margaret Kirkpatrick from Belfast, N. Ireland. My father is deceased and my mother aged 97 is living in a nursing home in Toronto,Canada. She was removed from the eb's because she was living with my sister. She attended meetings with the Kirks, Heggies and some others but when they no longer had a meeting place has not attended any other religous gatherings. My brother John Kirkpatrick has cut himself off from all of us including his mother and may God forgive him. He lives in Perth Ontario Canada. It was very emotional feeling for me to read some of the stories and recognise names from when I lived in N.Ireland. Charlie Cooper baptized me but I never belonged. I was very happy about the reasons that decided him to leave.

Hello everyone. We signed in last year, but since then my dear husband, Jim, went to be with the Lord on November 26, 1999 (see 1999 Obituaries - RKW) so I am just sending this as an update. I am now living in Ladner, near to my sons Daniel and Paul and their families. I have experienced much comfort from the Lord and my family has been very good to me.

I was lucky enough to be ex-communicated with all my immediate family in 1975, scars do flare up now and then. I am the daughter of Joyce Hyslop (Brisbane Qld and Ramon Waxman (deceased). I would love to hear from anyone who remembers me or my family or who is related to me. I was 15 when we left the EB's and it is just like a chapter wiped completely from your life. It is hard to escape the early teachings and would be good to compare notes on the subject.

Also I would love to know if anyone has news of my sister Dawn who married Tony Lock. They are being very strict peebs and do not speak to any of us.

I never realized just how many people there were in the Peebs in Austrailia and New Zealand. I wish I could connect with more people closer to home that I knew way back when. As stated earlier, I was 'shut up' at 16, and my life changed for the better from that point forward. I miss two of my brothers, Bruce & Brent, and one sister Cheryl who are still under the influence of these so called 'men of God'. And my parents Jack & Gloria Peebles too. But this seems to be the cross I must be willing to bear. I am blessed with a wonderful husband, (never in) Charles, a daughter, Demelza and son Tristan. We now attend the Alliance Church in North York, ON and are very happy there. The teaching is similar, but there are no 'regulations'. We are under God's Grace. Praise God for sending his son Jesus to die for all of us! John 3:16 Would love to hear from anyone who needs help in recovery. All things are possible with God's help! God Bless All of You, Susan

A FASCINATING YET ALMOST DEPRESSING REVELATION. HAVING BEEN ASSOCIATED WITH THE PLYMOUTH (OPEN) BRETHREN ALL MY LIFE I NEVER KNEW HOW FAR OUR EXCLUSIVE BRETHREN HAD DEPARTED FROM THE CLEAR TEACHING OF SCRIPTURE ON SO MANY ISSUES. WE HAVE MANY CONTACTS WITH THE LOCAL EXCLUSIVES THROUGH A RETAIL OUTLET, AND NOW I UNDERSTAND A LITTLE OF WHY THE WOMEN SEEM SO TOTALLY SUPRESSED OF SPIRIT. CONVERSATIONS HAVE CONFIRMED ALMOST ALL OF WHAT I HAVE READ TO DATE ON THE SITE AND MY HEART IS VERY SAD THAT THESE PEOPLE ARE LIVING UNDER SUCH FEAR. THEY NEED OUR PRAYERS.

I'm originally from Motueka, NZ. Son of Charles & Marie Deck. Our family left in '87 when I was 15 so I still have strong memories of the peebs. Moved to Australia when I was 19, am now married to Cindy (who'd never heard of the bretheren) & we have a 16 month-old son named Samuel. My life couldn't be better. Congratulations to Mark Ghinn & Debbie Grapes (my auntie) on their upcoming nuptials. Apologies to Deb if that makes her sound old cos she's not! Love to hear from ex'es in local area or others in NZ who know my family. (No preaching though. Don't bother)

Left by choice in 1978 from Sunbury, Victoria aged 16 taking my 5 younger brothers and sisters to be with excommunicated parents. Got letter from peebs 7 years later confirming that I was no longer a fit citizen after several approaches on their part to return. This website provides a great service and has brought back many dear but sad memories. Have since completed a PhD in neuropsychology and am now writing a novel structured around my experiences. Would be very keen to receive information regarding presence of more exclusive communications between selected 'overseers', either via extra meetings to those that us rank and file attended daily, or via joint correspondence between selected leaders, since the 70's. Essentially attempting to confirm whether or not political issues such as longer-term leadership and direction of 'ministry' or targeting of selected families for ex-communication for example ever existed. Thanks again for a wonderful website.

Having thrown my lot in with these people wholeheartedly since a small boy, it was like being shot in the back with a Colt 45, on that freezing cold Saturday care meeting morn way back in July 1978 when it was pronounced in harsh gutteral sounds "our brother is a liar and we can no longer walk wiyh him" As it turned out in the end it was the Lord's way of delivering us from a very parlous situation and fortunately I have my wife and 6 offspring still together and we can fellowship, worship and praise in simplicity.

How can we help our loved ones stil caught up in that pernicious system?

I've been to this site before and made some good contacts because of it! I am already listed as "Australia" but wondered if showing my "birth country of New Zealand" would help in catching up with more old family/friends??

This is such a great site - keep up the excellent work Dick!

I left in May 1982 just short of 17 years old, and have only just recently, managed to have my own little reunion with some "flesh & blood" on both my parents sides. It was so amazing and it makes you realise how cruel the "Exclusive Brethren" religion is, in stopping families from growing up together - they talk about the "generation of stolen children" in countries like England, Australia, etc; but I think we ex's would come under a very similar category! I have a lot of first & second cousins that I have been robbed of growing up with - very sad!

Take care ev'ryone! Cheers, Julie

I am the sister of Esther Pringle [nee Hewitt], last known address Blackburn, Lancashire. I know that she [and her husband Jim] have two sons David and Alistair and one daughter, Elizabeth. All of them are married and between them have nine children. I have recently seen photographs taken about ten years ago. Since being 'introduced' to the internet I am aware that there are people using it to trace their 'lost families'. I would dearly love to be in touch with my family. If anyone reading this knows them or where they are, would they please contact me at this e mail address.

Our connection with the Exclusive Brethren is from three families: the Pringles, the Padgets, and the Schochs. I have handwritten copies of meetings held in Queensland, written by my aunts, and both my husband and I have relatives we have never met. We have made contact with one group who have since left, but to our knowledge the rest are still heavily involved. Would love to hear from others who know of our families.

This website is sensational. For years we have wondered about the plumbus bums, their sickly fixed smiles hiding their history, conveniently disposed along with their freewill.

The brethren apparently had trouble here some years ago. our interest was heightened recently by a letter we received asking us to read your material, to increase awareness of their predicament. I have given a copy of your web address to a magistrate, This website will be an effective database of current brethren practices. Sooner or later solicitors used by the brethren will not be able to shed crocodile tears on behalf of the brethren. They have been an interesting subject of conversation in our local hostelry. Their treatment of women is sick.

My parents Edwin and Joyce Humber left the brethern in the 1970's leaving behind all of their families. My mother was from Geelong her maiden name was Eagle. I was only 3 when they left and missed the comfort of my relatives. I have seen cousins of mine still in the brethern grow up and watched their chidren go to school along with my own kids, unaware that they are even related. I hope that 1 day I will be able to accept some of these children with open arms when they realise the lies that they have been told. They should know we will always be there for them.

Hello all ex exclusives. I left 8.5 years ago at the age of 18. Fortunately after a year my parents and immediate family were thrown out for being "unworthy". My memories are of some very genuine (if a little misguided) Christians but also of a large number of hypocrites who were in it for the social life. Would like especially to hear from anyone in the Midlands who has left.

Hi anyone out there!!

My email address has changed so I thought I'd update the record.

Does anyone have any advice on how to explain things to children who have never been with the Bretheren? I left in 1980 and my mother is still in, I recently married and now have a beautiful 18 month old daughter, when she was born I felt incredible sadness that my mother (her Granny) would never meet her - how do I explain to her when she asks?

Incidently I never fell out with my mother, just some of the brothers who had some very strange ideas! My mum still cries if she passes me in the street and I would give anything to share my daughter with her.

Please reply if anyone has any ideas, as this is something that really bothers me!!

e-mail dated March 17, 2000 from Eric Anderson to Alistair Deayton as regards to his articles on Growing Up in the Brethren.

Hello Alistair;

Having just finished reading your articles as posted to Mr. Wyman's site I wanted to send along a note telling you how much I enjoyed them. They certainly brought back many memories for me having spent my younger years (1953 - 1970) among the brethren in Montreal, Canada. Being so young when I was "kicked out" I was unaware of much of what you wrote about concerning the 70's and 80's and found it extremely interesting and informative. I was something of a rebel; a black sheep, and could not abide the many rules which you articulated so well. But a couple of the many, you remind me how much I hated getting up for the 6:00AM Lord's Day meeting and kissing the brothers!

My name is Eric Anderson and I have lived in Toronto since 1972. My father, Ken Anderson, was the only child of (the late) John and Agnes Anderson (nee Walker) who were originally out of Paisley, Scotland. My grandmother had a number of sisters and brothers who remained in the "old country" but I don't know if they were in fellowship or not. John and Agnes would have immigrated to Canada in the 1920's. My Mother was from Plainfield, New Jersey and I remember going there often for three day meetings. I recently had the first communication from my brother Ross, in some thirty years, who is still "in", along with my parents, to let me know that my Dad is on his death-bed with a brain tumor. I was shocked to hear from him, not the news but rather that he would call; he pointed out that they felt informing us "was the right thing to do." Naturally I had to listen to some obligatory preaching a la Brethren as well.

I think that these people will have much to answer for, some day, in causing so much grief over the splitting up of family units. To me their policy of (seemingly) ever tightening "separation" is solely established to prevent the broadening of horizons and learning of many truths; a control tool for the internal powers that be.

It was a source of great joy for me when my eldest brother, Greg, left the PB's around 1985 followed by brother and sister, James and Shirley, in 1992. We are all now very close having shared a background that few can understand.

Many thanks for the articles, Alistair, and for sharing the personal perspectives and memories; I wish you and Julia much success in your pursuit of happiness and truth.

Best wishes;

Eric Anderson

I am the second child of Robert and Joan Hedley nee Devenish of Toronto Canada and my grandparents were James W and Kate Devenish of London Ontario Canada. My parents were kicked out of the meeting in the late 1940's when I and my sister and brother were young. We have lived with the consequenses of this and although we have had very happy and fulfilled lives, there are many questions about what and why things happened. If there is anyone that knew my parents, I would love to make contact.

Over time, I have read and re-read all the material at this site. One question kept coming to me over and over again. Dick, how is it that you can do so much for so many people all over the world? Your selfless sacrifice of time, resources, and I'm sure, peace of mind at times, has made such a difference in many of our lives. Your site has brought people back together, helped heal deep, deep wounds and allowed many of us to make new friends.

I am sure Jesus would approve of your service and devotion to helping others. Why, it's very Christian of you Dick, whether you are or not. In fact, your service and sacrifices mirror the attributes promoted by most religions. Kinda' funny isn't it? Keep up the great work!

Does ANYONE remember me?? Phil McGrath, once lived in Bangor, N. Ireland then moved to Leicester in 1958 and then moved up to Manchester in 1960.

I left the EB's about 22 years ago. I had to divorce my wife, Rosemary Venables from Newtown, Mid Wales and leave my 3 beautiful children who were all under 5 years old. I left to keep my sanity!! and the sacrifices were worth it. How the EB's screw you up!!!

Please phone 01963 23040 for a chat or e-mail me ANY time. I'd like to get in touch with those who might remember me.

Phil

I heartily agree with every word of Russ Mc Donalds' comment

I dont think Christ asked people wether they were christians or not before he helped them.

Christianity is shown in Christian acts, not checking up on people so you can pass judgement on them.

I see the maintenance of this site as a Christian act which has resulted in immeasureable benefit to many people.

Keep up the good work Dick.

Many thanks

Deane.

This is a message for all those who took part in a piece of research carried out by one of my students Vivienne Purcell last year. It has come to my attention that she has not informed you of the changes that took place. First of all she did not complete her dissertation last year and has had to take an extra year to do so - it will be handed in in June this year - so if you are waiting for her report you will, I regret to say, have to wait a bit longer. Secondly I understand that she has not informed you that I am no longer her supervisor. She is now being supervised by a clinical psychologist and lecturer at the University of East London. Please contact me if you need to regarding this matter.

Thank you

Dear Dick and others,

I wish to apologize for asking a personal question in such a public forum. I wish to also apologize to those who took my poorly delivered question to mean:

  1. That solely based on a YES or NO answer a person can be judged as having a living link with Jesus.
  2. That I have no valuation of any of Dick Wyman's work.

Yours Sincerely, Daniel

This is a note to Daniel Soukoreff,

Thank you for being humble enough to apologise on the www! I hope you won't be offended by my amusement though to see your e-mail address is "bigfoot" - you know...in your mouth?

Back to serious things - if anyone knows anything about the Shedden family, who in 1970 lived in Walsall, which was part of the Birmingham, England meeting - would you please let me know? I am particularly interested in what happened to Rosemary Shedden, who married a South African, and I believe lived in Johannesburg. Thanks

I was 10 when the EB's did the most productive thing they had ever done for us and 'kicked us out'! I am now 34 and well over the bitterness of the pain they caused to those I love. Now, I pity them, for their ignorance of the truth and for their impending accountability on Judgement Day. I am greatly irritated by flippant comments made by people who have not personally experienced the EB life of fear. Although I was just a child when I was an EB, my memories are vivid and still impact on my life today. I would love to communicate with anyone who would like to chat - just as soon as I organise an email! This site may be the most valuable "healing site" on the Web. Thankyou!

Hello again!

Here's my email.

Dick, many have already thanked you for this site, and I just wanted to add another 'Ta very much' to that list. I thought my EB memories were all in the past, but it is not so. It has been so interesting, therapeutic and enlightening to read the experiences of others. I am still absolutely in love with Jesus, my heavenly Father and Saviour, but do not stand for any of the excess baggage christians and some church groups still inflict on a pure relationship with Christ, .... thanks to the torturous experience as a young EB !!!!!!

Love to you all, Priscilla

Just a note re: proposed reunion in Adelaide, to reassure people it won't involve prayer, preaching or anything heavy, Just enjoying the company of long lost friends in private grounds on a quiet country property. Also plenty of interesting things for kids. Date yet to be agreed upon (but probably sometime in October) Let us know dates that would be suitable for you.

See you soon.
