I was kicked out 7 years ago and when I read the feelings expressed by those who have been through the ordeal I can just feel their initial mental agony and confusion. There is no greater way to rule human beings than to threaten their families and keep them ignorant about it by brain washing. I have personally met and spoken with Mr.Hales and the initial feeling you get is that he sees right through you. However about 18 months ago I came into contact with a gentleman who confirms that it has been a personal practise of his (JSH) from when he was very young to look at the person he is in contact with in that cold austere way and maybe perfected when he was in the Army. Call it love if you like I draw my own conclusions. There is so much to say on this subject that I could write a book.

Formerly from Brisbane, Australia. I left in '86 aged 22. Now live in Seattle, USA. Would love to hear from anyone that knew me once! I'm kicking myself for not finding this site earlier. Am looking for information about 1 of my sisters, Celia who married Bruce Clayton from Penrith in '87. I would be happy to talk to anyone that has left and is having a 'difficult' time adjusting. I have no interest in joining another church as of this day.

I am visiting again with a bit of history. My mother is Elsie Mulligan, of the Fresno Mulligans. My grandparents came to know the brethern and had many edvangelists/speakers stay at the farm house in Fresno. My father was Arthur Gattey (his family was Gertrude Taylor of Leeds and the Gattey's of London area). We went to a closed meeting in Fresno, when we moved to Taft we worshiped at the Baptist church after the one other brethren family we worshiped with departed. We came to Pomona to a Gospel Hall and stayed there until we moved to Claremont Gospel Chapel, where my mother and I still attend church. My father was "read out" in the early 1950s due to an adultrus relationship but my mother moved us all to a small independent community church. I do not know how many remember either the Mulligans or the Gatteys but thought I would add this.

Have just finished reading Marion Fields' book 'Shut Up Sarah' a very powerful read.

As someone who spent the first 29 years of life with the EB's, this book bought back a lot of memories. But I rejoice that the Lord has set me free from it all.

Well done Marion.

I met with the Local Churches under Witness Lee's ministry from 1975-1989. W Lee holds a strong teaching that God uses one man at a time.He felt after W Nee's departure, that he was that man: God's deputy authority, the oracle of God, the commander-in-cheif, etc. After reading your many articles, I see those who followed Taylor held a similar teaching. Am I right?

I have just come across this web site. The information will be very useful.

I attend a Free church (Alexander Free Church) which has it's roots in the Brethren Church. There was a break away many years ago and we now consider ourselves (just) Christians!

Nearly all the restrictive practises that are mentioned in this web site have been dispensed with.

THANK GOD.

One in Christ,

Nick Snode

My father, Prof. Malcolm Waldron, along with my mother Josephine and us kids were kicked out of the Oxford assembly in 1960 because a brother called David Johannson ( a student at Balliol College ) had no letter of accommodation, and the leading brother would not allow him to brwak bread. Since everyone knew his family was a leading family in the Melbourne Assembly my father and over a third of the others protested and were kicked out. We subsequently discovered that theletter had been sent and received, but that the man didn't like David and tried to block him!! My great great great great grandfather was probably converted by JND in County Mayo in 1827! Prauise God I still am an active Christian. I am in touch with many exes. My relatives are Basses and Burrs in London, Rugby, etc.

I have no family connection with the exclusive brethren. I have been helping in my children's primary school with IT and we have some brethren children in the class. They are allowed to watch all that is going on as long as they don't use the machine themselves. This includes using the Internet which we looked at in groups. I decided to find out more as I was very aware that one false move on my part may end up with them being withdrawn from IT altogether. If they were to leave the brethren the knowledge of IT would be so valuable to them so I didn't want to jeapordise this. The meeting hall is at the end of my road and I wish there was some way of saying 'if you do decide to leave come to us we would love to help you out'. We are christians and have friends at church who are ex brethren and we have heard from them what a wrench it can be to leave.

Hello to Everyone,

My maiden name was Peters and I grew up in deaf family. I left the brethren in 1973. My parents Ken and Joan Peters (now deceased) and my 3 sisters (one was deceased) are still involved in the fellowship but some of their children are still in and others are out. My 4 brothers (one now deceased) and I have not been in fellowship since 1972/1973. I have been married to Fernando Saulle (never in fellowship and he was born in Italy before he and his family were migrated to Australia about 45 years ago) and we have one daughter Winsome 12 and one son Gene 10. We live in Dandenong (one of suburb in Melbourne). I am very interesting to search on the net about Exclusive Brethren and brings me back to old memories and it is great to be freedom from the bondage of man made rules without according to the Scriptures. Please feel free to contact me if anyone can remember.

My family left the EB's in 1970 after "the split". I was susbsequently with the Frost group until 1989, when myself, my brother and sister left, searching for reality. I am now with Christian Fellowship Church in Belfast and have discovered what it's like to have a reality of God in my life. My grandfather was G.H.Patton. I'd be interested in hearing from anybody who recognises the name.

My father (John Stollery) was raised in Summit NJ with the Brethren. Fortunately for my three brothers and myself, he was kicked out when he married my mother in 1954.He never spoke about his childhood and we never knew our grandparents. We also hav have one aunt and five cousins that we will also never know becusse of this cult. I cannot believe that you people call yourself Christians. The way this system divides families is a shame. The best thing that may father ever did was to be baptized Catholic in 1985. He died in 1996 and enjoyed a Christian mass of the Resurrection. I know that he is at peace and not for one minute regrets this decision. Jesus Christ was ever-present in our home growing up and resides in us today.

I am prompted to sign on as the next logical step to visiting a reunion here in my home city. As I approached the "Hall" where the gathering was being held I saw two women outside and had an eerie flashback to fellowship meetings of the past! I very nearly jumped back on my bike there and then! I knew a few people as it turned out, and the biggest surprise was someone who knew me from a visit to Germany over 30 years ago! Since this message is going into oblivion and I cannot see what I have written I will not add too much more except to say, Canada gave me the physical and emotional distance to work through many of my feelings about the past. I was mightily surprised at my reaction at confronting real live Ex PB's! Probably there will be more to add one day.

I have just heard of this web site and find it very fascinating. My name before I was married was Heather Smith, one of Colin Smith's daughters from Hamilton. I would like to hear from anyone in the Hamilton-Cambridge Area, names like Smith, Hoyle, Burgess, Campion, Renton, King, Discombe, Blackman etc, some of these will be relatives and some just people I grew up with. I left 25 years ago, a single with another sister, and only recently have some of my other brothers and sisters decided to leave the faith. I have made a life for myself and my family and a career and are very happy. All for now, hear from anyone soon.

I was 13 at the time of the Aberdeen split when my parents came out. In the years that followed I witnessed so many disillusioned brethren running from all forms of Christian fellowship and ultimately from Christ himself in reaction to the revealed wickedness of those we had looked up to as leaders and exemplars of the faith. But the Author and Finisher never failed us ! Don't run from Him ! He was working all things together for our good, teaching us hard lessons so that we may be more like Him. Don't look up to men. Look up to the One who humbled Himself. And don't let's position ourselves to be looked up to, as so many did in the "system". We will only fall.

An avid reader and author of two books (both compilations): "Secrets to Spiritual Power: from the selected writings of Watchman Nee," and "Gleanings from Robert Govett." While presently working on a compilation of Darby's "Synopsis of the Bible," I am thoroughly enjoying reading through F.W. Grants Numerical Bible. The Word takes on a richness of new life and meaning through an understanding of the hidden meanings of the types, shadows, and symbolism of Scripture. The Brethren, and certain others familiar with them, excelled in this area of Scriptural study. It is meat through which the soul can be strengthened and sustained.

We left the E.Bs. in Brighton England in August 1970 with many others. In 1974 we went to Western Australia and enjoyed 22 years fellowship with the Christians at North Perth Gospel Chapel and activities with several other churches in W.A. For family reasons we returned to England in 1996 and are now settled in Uckfield and enjoying our involvement at Grange Evangelical Church. We have just started to learn a little about computers (old dogs can learn new tricks !!) and have been fascinated by this site. Would love to hear from any old friends out there.

Hi-I came out of the Exclusives three and a half years ago with 7 of my 8 children. My concern is for the young people who leave on their own. Could we establish some kind of "safe house" where these unexperienced innocents can get on their feet without stumbling into the many pitfalls so many of us have. I do not have my own computor so I have not listed my email address. I also wondered about setting up a chat room for this purpose. I don't know how to go about it. Living in Texas and loving it.

Hearing about Jim Taylor etc reminded me of a verse in the Bible,"...many shall follow out their destructive ways, because of whom the way of the truth shall be evil spoken of" 2 Peter 2.2

I was never in the Exclusive Brethren. My dad was among Exclusive Brethren 50 years ago in Bermuda and Barbados; H.O. Emptage was a prominent leader in those days. Dad is 86 and is not interested in religion. His was a bad experience.

I was saved in connection with an Independent Fundamental Baptist Church. I migrated into the "tight" Open (Gospel Hall) Brethren for 10 years. I am now amongst the so-called re-united brethren, a mixture of Kelly Brethren and others. The fellowship is very healthy from a doctrinal vantagepoint. Fellowship that I have enjoyed amongst the assemblies has been very sweet. I can thoroughly commend and recommend the fellowship of brethren in which we meet to any Christian without any reservations. If I can help any Christian in any way, it is my greatest joy so to do.

Hi. I know what you're taking about and I'm still trying to get used to this (evil machine)????

It's all so crazy what they think inside and it doesn't look to be changing all that much. A friend came out the other day and he was going really well untill we were spyed on untill we left and then they kidnapped him to go home

I'm out for a year tomorrow and it seems to have been year of my life. I have learn so much about Jesus that I had not learned in the 15 years inside and I even spent a year away from my parents living with an uncle because my parent were withdrawn from. I thought it was really bad until I got to the other side one cold lonely and cracked a tinning. My parrents were so pleased to see me and I was so happy I stayed awake for 36 hours straight.

We left the E.B. in 1975 at which time we lived in Kings Lynn in England. We then moved away from England in 1980 and the last 19 years have lived in various countries, mostly in S.E. Asia, before finally settling in Vienna. On our travels, we had 4 lovely children, 2 of which still live with us, and 2 are studying in England. It's so interesting to see so many names on this Web site from the past.

Shut up in 1973. Would love to hear from any old friends, so many names on the guest book we either knew or knew their relatives.

I grew up in the peebs and went to the Aberdeen Rd  Boronia Malvern and Boronia meetings I was ejected  in 73 aged 16. I think all of my family except one are still in. It would be great to hear from anyone I grew up with. I remember the Peters and Hornzy families well.

Reading through the guest book brought back memories good and bad.

My wife and I have become computer literate this year (1999).This website tells a saddening, but also an enouraging saga of those of us who have been disentangled from Exclusivism. In due course I hope to put my contribution on the web. All of our stories are different in detail, but I think all of us give thanks to our Almighty God for his deliverance, often in unexpected ways.
