I have been "out" for 23 years. At the time of that depart- ure, I had not even one person to talk to about the whole situation I knew things were wrong-but too unsure about what actually was wrong. Three of my four children are in the EB, one-Oxbow, one-Gothenburg, one-Omaha. Naturally, I haven/t seen my daughters in 23 years.but I suppose there still is help. God has been so good to me, and I think this site is tremendous.

I stated that I didn't have one person to talk to. That really isn't quite true, but it is that they didn't understand how little I knew about the organization. Since I was a single Mother and there was no Father to be in on the conversations amongst the men, alot passed me by. But how happy to be freed of all that life.

Dear brother you have done a good job on this site and I am sure glad to find something with a familiar tone. We left in 1970 but remained with a group of EBs until 1994 when we went to meet with OBs. Where we are now reminds me of the days of my youth in Gothenburg, Ne. and the meeting there before so much unbiblical stuff was enforced. Would like to converse about feelings toward our OB as they seem to have good doctrine (at least where we fellowship).

Affectionately in Christ,

CWT

Currently I am visiting my brother Nicholas Wilson in Vancouver and have been skiing at Whistler and Blackcombe with him and Eric Huffey for the past few days in glorious sunshine. I was here in 1969, 1981, 1995 (for Nicholas's graduation from Regent College with a Master's Degree in Divinity - yes a far cry from his former profession of growing lettuce, cumcumbers and tomatoes in Thanet.

In 1973 I married the great granddaughter of JT and daughter of Bill Petersen. Margaret and I have two children, Julia who was 23 on 12th April and who gave birth to a baby boy the following day on 13th April. He is to be known as "DJ" - David James Andrews. The next day was our 26th wedding anniversary. We have a son, Charles Guy Wilson, who was born in Bermuda on 9th November, 1978 when we lived there. We were there from 1977 until the end of the next decade - 12 years plus and had a wonderful time meeting lots of very interesting people both in and without the Christian community. Charlie (as he now prefers to be known) is reading Biblical Studies along with Hebrew, Greek and German at Sheffiel University. He has just over two years to go and is loving it there.

Needless to say, it is the genius, Eric Huffey, who has encouraged me to put pen to paper on this website which was his idea. Well done Eric. You have put hundreds of us in touch with others whose names we have not heard for thirty or forty years.

Thank you for enabling so many to put pen to paper in this way.

Guy Wilson

I have just recently broken up with my boyfriend. He ran away from his family after living in the Brethren for 17 years of his life. He treated me badly but I found this site and thankyou becuase it has given me an insight to why he treated me in this way, I understand him more with what he has been through and I'll continually pray that his family will follow in his footsteps and leave EB.

I grew up in a brethren church, as did my father before me and so on. I heard a lot of good biblical teaching while I was there and even enjoyed the intamacy of the small church. It breaks my heart to know that some of the brethren have gotten so caught up in legalism that they have forgotten what the scrptures really said. If they would go back and really study the book of Galations like Martin Luther did they would see the legalism they are bogged down in. The revelations in this book freed Martin Luther to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ as it was meant to be. The Gospel is about the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross. It is about the ressurection of the Son of God. It is about the freedom to know that there is nothing WE can do to get to heaven. Jesus paid it ALL. Always remember that God loved us ALL so much that he allowed his Son to pay OUR price. Feel free to contact me by email anytime if you would like to discuss this further.

I was born in Baltimore and raised in the Exclusive Brethren meeting there. My maiden name was Barbara Waskey. I watched the movie Oscar and Lucinda last night and it prompted me to search the web for more information on the Plymouth Brethren. I was amazed to find several websites on the subject, and am extremely curious about Peter Carey's background, since it was obvious that he had done his research on the Brethren.

Have just come across this site - can't believe it's on the Internet!!!

Would love to leave some comments - will come back another day though.

I left the "EB's" in May 1982.

It's amazing to hear that they're still full of double standards and still hypocritical!!! They will never change - good luck to them staying in the "dark ages!!!"

I just want to correct something Guy Wilson said a few days ago. I DID NOT HAVE THE IDEA FOR THIS SITE. I did suggest to Dick in the early days that he start a list of ex members. But if any of you have received help from this site, renewed a friendship, brought back a memory; you owe a HUGE debt to Dick Wyman. It has been his effort, time and money, that instigated this site and maintains it.

I'd be interested to hear news of Ron and Rosalie Wallace who are still there.(Bryan's sister) And also of Mervyn and Rachel Suckling who are still there. If anyone would like to make contact with Mum or Dad they can do so at the email above. Mum was a Forrest. She grew up in Papatoetoe. Dad grew up in Manurewa. Mum's brother David Forrest and all his family are still in the Peebs too.

I have always been fascinated by what 'outsiders' thought of our heritage. When part of the Brethren, we were individually members of the Beloved, collectively forming the Bride. Titles and labels were unimportant to us - we knew who we were - we owned the Light, we were the Way and the Truth ... no-one came to God except through us!

It was not until I was well clear of the cult that I heard our title - we were the Exclusive or Closed Brethren.

And now, two days ago, I heard another name that frankly had me in stitches. A colleague, a Godly man, nodded sagely when I shared of my childhood in the EB's:

"Ah yes!" he murmured, "I have indeed heard of The Frozen Chosen ..."

She married a PB and is now a Norton. Her husband's name is Ray Norton. They previously lived in Kalispell, Montana. If anyone would be kind enough to find their number for me, it would be most appreciated. My family back in South Africa has refused to divulge any information. Look forward to hearing some of you soon.

My parents left in 1983, when I was 7 years old and I still have clear memories of all the people we left behind. I am presently introducing my father to the wonders of the internet, but foresee him in rapid correspondence in the future!!

As a person who was raised in the baptist churches, I want to say that I am glad that I found fellowship with the brethren assemblies and therefore discovered NT church principles. Now I firmly believe that, for the most part, baptist doctrine is bible doctrine and the influence and current day ministries of primarily the fundamentalist, independent baptists is positive. However, the brethren are much closer to the NT when it comes to the purpose of the church, organization, worship, leadership, etc. I issue a plea for the continuance and rising up of independent, fundamental, brethren assemblies that are holding to brethren and NT church distinctives. I want to especially point to the Ross Bible Chapel in Ross, Ohio and to the Community Bible Chapel in Hico, Texas as model brethren assemblies and ministries. Everybody should access the website http://www.cnview.com to see an excellent brethren assembly and ministry in progress.

We were both at least the third generation with the Taylor meeting. In the 1960's we became increasingly aware that error had crept in and finally left in about 1965. We met with others who left about the same time as we did, but one by one through deaths we became too small to carry on with the breaking of bread, and felt that we needed to find other Christians.

We did find a very fundamental Baptist Church where we get rich ministry and experience much love among the Lord's people. One of the real surprises was that there are many devout Christians other than EB's.

We now have a daughter and son-in-law and four beautiful grandchildren.

The Lord has blessed us much and our regret is that we didn't leave the Taylor meeting much earlier when we first became aware of the error.

We still feel love for many still caught in the system, but have enjoyed renewing contact with other guests whom we remember from years past.

Will be happy to hear from any who remember us.

Interested in hearing from anyone who had a similar reaction to mine. All the religious teachings of my parents[Frank and Audrey] went out the window in 1969 when I left this cult. Furthermore I slammed the window shut, locked it and pulled down the blinds on any other kind of spiritualty. If your reaction was similarly vehement...talk to me!

Dick, your work here is quite valuable. Thank you.

We are looking to see if we can find any members from the old Cornish family of Tregarthen who settled in Cardiff towards the late part of the 1890s. My husband is desended from Hugh Tregarthen and Elizabeth Treweek and we have been informed that some of the family became part of the Plymouth Brethren and other family members lost touch with them. We would like to know if it would be possilbe to have some communication with them if they desired? Thank you for taking the time to read this message.

Thank you so much for your enlightened coments and info. We all have our stories to tell. I knew about Aberdeen as a child, but the Brethren and its perversions linger within our family. My parents were mentally destroyed. I am now a Christian (I never was as an Infant Brother) and have found a large degree of release from this fundamentalist sect. I will never be totally free as long as I live.

I recently discovered this site. What a brilliant idea, Good work!

I left the closed brethren in 1980 over the issue of higher education. Nobody in a million years is ever going to convince me that there is something un-Christian or otherwise wrong about striving to get a decent education. Since I left I see they have sunk to new levels of depravity. When they can't have a garage door opener because radio waves are somehow 'evil' one has to question their sanity. I just can't understand how otherwise intelligent people will accept this foolishness.

I hope this thing doesn't end in tragedy like Waco Texas or Jones Town Guyana.

Comming out of the Apartheid era has been a similar experience to leaving the Exclusives. We have had to learn tolerance for people with other cultures and (non-Christian) religions; after living in a protected and globally isolated enviroment, we are now exposed to pornography, legal gambling, legal abortion, drug trafficing etc. Instead of compromising our standards, it has made us value them and fight to maintain them.

By the way as far as I know I was never "withdrawn from"! When I left at 19, they said I was too young to know my own mind and I should be "shrunk from"

It's on Gordon Rainbow's My Brethren site. "Blinded by Might" by Cal Thomas on the Moral Majority is very interesting read, christians coming back to more scripture views as to political involvement and the importance of the preaching of the gospel in our day. Regards, Daniel June 17/99
